Burglaries in Switzerland: How perpetrators operate – and what this means for your protection

A hooded person breaks into a lit window at night using a crowbar. Burglaries in Switzerland: How perpetrators operate – and what that means for your protection.

According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), almost 33,000 were born in Switzerland in 2024. Burglaries were registered. In addition, there were around 13,000 break-ins. That's a total of over 46,000 cases in a single year – roughly 126 per day. Compared to 2023, this represents an increase of 15%. More on this in our article "Burglaries in Switzerland 2024" . What the figures don't show: how burglars select targets, which vulnerabilities they exploit, and why many houses have more security flaws than their owners realize. This article explains what statistics and security experts know about typical patterns – and what that means specifically for your protection.

What burglary statistics reveal about perpetrator behavior

According to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), the clearance rate for burglaries is below 20%. That's not Random number – it reflects the fact that professionally acting perpetrators systematically proceed in a manner that rarely leaves traces that lead to identification.

Security experts and cantonal crime statistics repeatedly describe similar patterns:

- Time of day: A significant proportion of burglaries occur during daylight hours.

in the early evening hours – when houses are empty, but no lights are on yet.

Burglaries at dusk are particularly common in German-speaking Switzerland.

- Time of year: The autumn and winter months regularly see higher

Case numbers. Shorter days mean more darkness – and therefore more cover.

for perpetrators.

- Choice of target: Perpetrators prefer targets that are quick and inconspicuous.

Provide access. Houses that are difficult to see from the street,

They are statistically more often the focus of attention than openly located properties.

What these patterns show: Burglars avoid risk. They often don't choose the

not the most interesting, but the simplest object.

Which building weaknesses are typically affected

Burglaries rarely happen by chance. They occur where vulnerabilities are apparent to criminals – and where the effort required seems minimal. In analyzing single-family homes and apartments, we regularly identify similar categories of vulnerabilities that make life easier for burglars:

Low-resistance access points

Outdated locks, doors without multi-point locking systems, or windows without burglar-resistant fittings offer little resistance. Mechanical security gaps are often the first point of entry – regardless of whether an electronic system is present.

Missing or non-integrated safety elements

Individual security measures offer significantly less protection than a comprehensive security concept. Anyone who has only upgraded the front door but forgotten patio doors or basement windows has a gap in their system. Professional security analyses therefore always consider the entire property – not individual points in isolation.

Lack of deterrent effect

Visible security technology changes a perpetrator's cost-benefit analysis. Visible external sirens, camera housings, motion detectors, or warning signs indicating a connected system are demonstrably deterrents – because they signal effort and the risk of detection. But beware – professional gangs often quickly recognize mere decoys and know how to test the authenticity of an alarm system.

No response chain in case of alarm

An alarm system that only generates local noise has limited effectiveness if the house is remote, neighbors are away, and no alert is sent to an emergency call center. Its effectiveness increases significantly if an alarm triggers a defined, traceable chain of responses.

Why laypeople often fail to recognize weaknesses themselves

The problem for many homeowners is not disinterest. It is usually the lack of reference points and a lack of knowledge about how quickly professional burglary gangs can gain access to buildings – usually a few seconds and simple tools are enough. Those who know their house inside and out think in terms of usage patterns, not burglary paths. Our perspective as security experts is different:

During a professional on-site security analysis, we systematically check, among other things:

  • All potential access points on the building (not just the front door and ground floor)

  • Mechanical protection quality of doors, windows, locks and fittings

  • Sight lines, lighting conditions and natural cover around the building

  • Whether any existing technology is up-to-date and correctly installed

  • How we can combine individual measures into a coherent concept

The result is never a "standard, off-the-shelf" package – but rather an assessment tailored to your property and your specific situation. What we find consistently interesting is that for many homeowners, this analysis is the first time they've seen their house from a different perspective.

What distinguishes professional security from individual measures

There is no absolute protection. But there is effective, burglar-resistant protection, and this arises from the interplay of several levels:

  1. Mechanical security: Burglar-resistant doors, certified locks, secured windows. These measures increase the physical effort and time required – both factors that deter perpetrators.

  2. Electronic security: Alarm systems with motion detectors, magnetic contacts, sirens, and app notifications. They detect unauthorized entry and trigger a response.

  3. Video surveillance: Cameras document and deter crime. Combined with an alarm system, they increase evidence gathering, alarm verification, and response speed.

  4. Connection: The connection to an external emergency call center ensures that an alarm does not go unnoticed – even if you are not at home.

These levels are not standalone alternatives, but rather a sensible combination. A holistic 360° security concept takes all of them into account – tailored to your property, your budget, and your habits.
